The Beyond Organic radio show is a unique environmental radio and multimedia program, addressing issues of organic food and farming, social and environmental sustainability. The most recent episode “Gulf Coast Cough & Government Spin” addresses the aftermath of hurricane Katrina and potentially harmful mold growth that both FEMA and the EPA are dismissing. Dr Gina Solomon, Senior Scientist, Natural Resources Defense Council, reports on her recent research trip to the area and is joined on air by Eric Schmelzer of the New Orleans Environment Watch. Recent stories include “ City Farmers: Small Space, Big Impact” highlighting urban farming in South Central Los Angeles ( Jan 11) and “Food Marketing & Kids” ( Jan 4).

As their press package notes, “The show offers news, interviews and research that fills a void left by public and private broadcasters”. Truly, these are stories you will not hear on NPR with their list of corporate sponsors.

SFPFS member Michael Straus, of the renowned Straus dairy family, rode his tractor off the farm to bring PR services to other progressive companies when he founded Straus Communications. The Beyond Organic radio show followed, produced by Straus Communications in association with Icicle Networks.

The Weekly, 44-minute talk / interview show features 2-4 guests. Listeners' e-mails are read on-air; however, the show does not accept telephone listener call-ins. Guests are encouraged to appear live in-studio (San Francisco), but can also join in by phone. Publicists are encouraged to review the show archives prior to pitching. Guests are chosen to represent a diversity of perspectives.

The show reaches thousands of listeners across North America via AM and FM radio stations, Sirius satellite radio, webcasting and podcasting. Current radio stations include:

KWMR 90.5 FM - Point Reyes Station, Calif.
KWMR 89.3 FM - Bolinas, Calif.
KGOE 1480 AM - Eureka, California
KPOV 106.7 FM - Bend, Oregon
WPVM 103.5 FM - Ashville, North Carolina
WEDO 810 AM - Pittsburgh, PA
CHRY 105.5 FM - Toronto, Canada
